A book is a doorway to another world, to another
perspective. I believe a book is a way to escape reality for a moment of time
and explore the imaginative and/or in-depth thinking part of your brain. In my
mind it doesn’t matter if a book is digital, hardbound or paper book, it’s
about what the message of the story is that matters. Personally I tend to read
more paper and hardbound books more than digital copies. I agree with Nancy Joe
Sales when she says that “I don't think books will ever disappear for this
reason: We need them too much. They remind us that we exist; they show us how
we have lived,” (Sales). I also think that books will never disappear or just
appear digital only. I don’t think that people will give up the physical
companion feeling that a paper book has. I don’t think that a book is magical
but it depends on who is reading a specific story. One person may connect to a
story in a different way than another person due to personal background,
heritage, ect.

Book 1 Project: The Peculiar Fair
The fan experience for Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs that everyone wishes for is to have a peculiar fair. There would be multiple tents and areas with each having a peculiar event. The main tent area would be a show of the peculiar children who would show off their powers and introduce themselves. The next stage area would hold a giant maze in which you would have to try and get out while running away from the monsters. The monsters would be located throughout the maze and if you got caught they would escort you to the exit. The next tent would be a playing area for paintball; Wights vs. the children. The game will consist of the two teams battling it out with paintball guns. Along with these activities would be exhibits and food stands that all have a 1940 theme to them. It’ll be fun for the whole family.
In the story Jacob meets children who have peculiar powers, each being different and unique. After he is welcomed to Miss Peregrine’s home he then is invited to watch the children demonstrate their powers through a circus act. The main tent area would reenact this scene. For all the diehard fans there will be a name drawing for 5 people who will get to meet all the children from the book. The next event with the maze and monsters was brought from when Emma and Jacob had to run through the “maze” of bog and marsh to escape the monster chasing them. The maze will give a similar experience to the fans of the book. It is also great fun for other people who decided to come and check it out. In the book you learn about Wights and how they have a rivalry with the children. The paintball match in the third tent will show the relationship between the two and how Jacob and the children worked together to defeat the Wight. Along with these three events you will be able to look at peculiar exhibits and shop for peculiar merchandise at the many shops and exhibits located around the fair. All this will give the feel of how it was like for Jacob to be living in a past time.
This idea will work because it is something new that no one has ever seen before which will attract a lot of people not including the book readers. It also is a cost efficient idea that will generate a lot of money while spending little to set up. The fair is not only for people who have read the book but for anyone interested in finding out more about it. It also does not have an age group so it is family friendly. Most importantly this fair will broaden the audience for this book and will bring more readers into the world which will benefit the author and themselves. It will also encourage fans of the book to stay connected by doing hands-on activities and get a real life experience of the book. Fans most likely will wonder if there will be a sequel to the book which once they see there is will keep them tuned in until it comes out.
